What this means for your initiative.

Practical guidance for teams planning software, AI adoption or delivery capacity.

These two models get conflated constantly, but they answer different questions. Staff augmentation answers "we have the plan and the team, we just need more hands"; outsourcing answers "we need someone else to own the plan and the delivery." Choosing the wrong one for your situation is usually what causes the friction people blame on the vendor.

What staff augmentation actually means

Augmented developers join your existing team, use your tools, follow your architecture decisions and report to your technical leadership. It fits when you have internal product and technical direction but need more execution capacity—fastest to start, but requires you to actively manage the added engineers.

What outsourcing actually means

A vendor owns a defined scope of work end-to-end—their own project management, architecture decisions and quality bar, reporting against milestones rather than daily tasks. It fits when you don't have internal technical leadership for a specific initiative, or want a single accountable party for a bounded deliverable.

How to actually choose

Ask two questions: do we have someone internally who can direct day-to-day technical decisions, and is the scope of work well-defined enough to hand off with fixed milestones? Answering yes to the first points toward staff augmentation; yes to the second (without the first) points toward outsourcing.
